(28/05/2013) A major new campaign, aimed at helping people with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) who are experiencing difficulties with everyday tasks, has been launched.
RA is a chronic and often painful disease affecting the joints, causing them to become inflamed. An inflamed joint looks swollen and red and appears warm to touch. This inflammation can lead to permanent damage in the joints if the disease is not treated. Around 40,000 people in Ireland are affected.
The awareness campaign, which includes television and radio advertisements, has been launched by Arthritis Ireland (AI) in association with Pfizer, and aims to help people effectively manage everyday tasks such as tying shoelaces and chopping with a knife.
A recent survey revealed that almost every person with RA has some difficulties with everyday tasks, with opening a jar being widely described as the most difficult.
“It is normal to feel powerless and isolated when joint pain, stiffness and swelling begins to prevent people from doing even the most basic, everyday tasks. However, it is possible to effectively manage arthritis,” insisted AI chief executive, John Church.
He said that the first step is to call AI to receive a free information pack. This includes details on symptoms, treatment and support services.
According to consultant rheumatologist, Dr David Kane, if a person is experiencing painful stiff and swollen joints, ‘it could be an early sign of arthritis’.
“I would urge them to visit their doctor and get in touch with Arthritis Ireland to receive their free information pack,” he said.
